How to Bring Small Town Iowa Back From Extinction

April 10, 2007

In recent years 37 Iowa small towns have had their downtowns rescued from near extinction by the "Main Street Iowa" program. It provides technical know-how to communities to restore their downtowns, and supporters say that’s the first step to restoring the entire community. The Governor wants lawmakers to give a million dollar boost to the program, but so far it’s only halfway there. State Sen. Jeff Angelo says funding has been rejected for grants to help downtown business owners refurbish buildings.

"I really think that is a shame given there are so many examples of success across the state of main street communities."

Laura Zimmerman is the administrator of the Main Street Iowa Program in Sac City. She believes it’s important for rural Iowa to stay alive because that is what makes Iowa special.

"If you have a thriving downtown, a healthy downtown, then you are more apt to get industry to locate to your communities."

She adds that these grants produce a considerable amount of private money that leads to more development. Zimmerman says for every dollar spent, nearly $67 in private investment is generated.
