Taking Stock of Global Warming Emissions in NV

It looks like the first step in tackling climate change in Nevada will require taking a statewide inventory. Clark County Sen. Dina Titus offered an amendment to the greenhouse gas control measure in the state Senate Wednesday that requires the Silver State to determine where the gases that contribute to global warming are coming from.

"Well, we don’t really know who the emitters are in Nevada, we know it’s power companies, but we don’t know how much they’re emitting; so we need to identify them, find out how much greenhouse gas is out there and then figure out what kind of levels we need to roll it back."

Titus says if we don’t do that first, Nevada won’t be in a position to be competitive with the neighboring western states that are in the process of setting up trading provisions to deal with the problem. A poll taken this spring found 64 percent of Nevada voters favor taking some action to curb global warming.

Jane Feldman with the Sierra Club adds that while lawmakers in Nevada and other states are crafting local solutions, Congress also needs to get into the act.

"The message specifically is "step it up" Congress. We want you to take action to be part of the 2 percent solution. We want you to cut carbon emissions 80 percent by the year 2050. We think that’s doable and it will make a big difference."

Saturday will be the fist ever National Day of Climate Action. Nevadans can take part in events all across the state including continuous showings at the Spring Valley Library in Las Vegas of An Inconvenient Truth and Kilowatt Ours for Adults, and the Lorax movie for kids. Over 1,300 “Step It Up’ events are planned in all fifty states. To the find the one nearest you, visit online at www.stepitup07.org.
