Iowans' Role in Reducing Global Warming

April 20, 2007

This Sunday is Earth Day, and it's taken on greater significance with the rising concerns about global warming. Neila Seaman with the Iowa Sierra Club says everyone from individuals to businesses and governments has a role to play in stabilizing the climate. She says it will take bold action now to cut up to 80 percent of our carbon dioxide emissions by the year 2050.

“To reach our goal of cutting emissions 2 percent per year, starting this year, means we must start right now to make different, better decisions about the energy we use at home, at work and as a nation.”

She believes the goal of 2 percent a year will enable us to build a cleaner, smarter and safe energy future. She points to several things every Iowan can do.

“You can push your local utility to provide clean renewable energy, like wind and solar power, and you can ask your mayor and the governor to adopt strong policies to reduce local carbon emissions.”

Seaman encourages everyone to increase energy efficiency both at home and in the car, which will save energy, money, and lower your "carbon footprint."
