Earth Day: How Ohioans Can Join In

April 20, 2007

Earth Day is this weekend, and many Ohioans will mark the occasion by cleaning up parks, planting trees, and joining educational events and celebrations. Sierra Club National Conservation Director Greg Haegele will be in Ohio for Earth Day events. He's calling on Ohioans to commit to a "2 percent solution" to fight global warming by cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 2 percent each year with simple lifestyle and household changes.

“For example, if you replace two incandescent light bulbs in your house with two compact fluorescents, you start making a dent. You can carpool or get a more efficient car.”

Haegele notes that energy efficiency at home and work is another good way to reduce carbon emissions, and save money on utility bills. Ohio is anticipating a big turn-out for Earth Day events with over 800 volunteers expected in Columbus alone.

“Earth Day is a great opportunity for all kinds of people to get involved who haven't up to this point done that, and that's what we're seeing across the country.”

Earth Day is officially Sunday, the 22nd.
