Value-Added Producer Grant Deadline Right around the Corner

April 30, 2007

The USDA is now accepting applications for millions of dollars in grants to develop value-added agriculture business ventures and alternative sources of renewable energy. Mike Heavrin with theCenter for Rural Affairs says the grants are for any producer who needs capital to move value-added ideas forward.

“Anyone who has an idea that would add value to things you grow or raise on your farm, would be eligible.”

Heavrin notes that Value-Added Producer Grants help address economic decline and poverty in rural areas by helping farmers and ranchers access premium markets. He believes when agriculture succeeds, rural Iowa succeeds.

“Because that brings money to the area, it could ultimately result in a lot of new jobs. So, it's a terrific benefit to rural communities.”

Heavrin points out that the program was created to help producers expand their customer base, which means a greater portion of the profits go to the producer.

The deadline for applications is May 16. For more information on the Value-Added Producer Grant Program and how to apply, visit
