International Company Goes for MT Home-Grown

April 30, 2007

Montana farmers and ranchers dedicated to sustainable production are making more inroads, this time at an international hotel company. The Hilton Garden Inn Bozeman is rolling out new catering menus this week featuring locally-grown foods purchased direct from producers.
Lill Erickson with the Corporation for the Northern Rockies says it's a move that will help Montana's farming economy and rural communities.

“[They are] putting their dollars where their commitment is by actually buying from a lot of local producers.”

Erickson notes that buying local, sustainable products reduces gas and oil use, and greenhouse gases, because food doesn't have to travel far. Several local restaurants and grocery stores have also made commitments to buying Montana sustainable products.

She adds that bringing local products into stores and restaurants makes customers happy, but it takes a little extra work to get the supply line in place.

“What we want to do is have our food system rely more on family farms and ranches, and create relationships between the grocers, and the restaurateurs, and chefs, and the farmers and ranchers who produce our food.”
