Eight states plus Washington DC had primaries yesterday, in the midst of both the new coronavirus pandemic and clashes between law enforcement and protestors.

Scientists and the president are calling for action, and Americans agree. The latest International Panel on Climate Change report shows investing in clean, sustainable energy is financially smart. President Bush has called for energy independence, and a new poll shows most Americans want action on global warming now. Don Safer with the Tennessee Environmental Council says the new strategic plan from Tennessee Valley Authority is an opportunity to satisfy public demands.

“It is discouraging that TVA's not taking the opportunity to jump into the forefront of answering the question of global warming.”

Safer says conservation should be strongly encouraged, and TVA should diversify energy production into sustainable sources, such as wind and solar. TVA is taking comments on its new long-term strategic plan. They say its goals are to meet rising demand and keep prices low for consumers.

Safer believes conservation should play a stronger role in the TVA plan.

“They just plan on electricity demand growing, and meeting that growing demand by building more nuclear plants, and even more coal plants.”
