What Mom Really Wants for Mother's Day: Health Insurance, Family Leave

May 10, 2007

The perfect gift for mom may be something that keeps on giving, like health insurance for kids or paid family leave. Oregon legislators are considering the “Paid Family Leave” bill this month, and there's still a small chance for the “Healthy Kids Act” that would provide health insurance to all Oregon kids. Cathy Kaufmann with Children First for Oregon says the Paid Family Leave bill would help thousands of families.

“This bill would provide parents, especially moms, some pay to help support the family needs while they're home caring for new kids or an ill family member.”

The Paid Family Leave bill is expected to head to the House floor this month. Kaufmann notes that if the legislature doesn't resurrect the Healthy Kids Act, there's already a push to let voters have their say and put it on the ballot. Nationally, Congress is considering the “All Healthy Children Act” to give all kids health insurance.

Kaufmann notes that right now over 116,000 Oregon children don't have health insurance.

“That means moms have to worry about how to get care for their kids when they need it and how to protect their families from financial crisis should their children ever become seriously ill or injured.”
