Oregon Letter Carriers Deliver Mail-And Fight Hunger

May 11, 2007

The cupboards are getting bare at food pantries across the state, but Saturday, every community in Oregon is joining in to change that. As part of the largest one day food drive in the nation, letter carriers will pick up food left by postal patrons at their mailboxes and deliver it to local food banks. Letter carrier L.C. Hansen says they love to be able to make a difference.

“We see what goes on in poor communities and in pockets of poverty. We see people who are working poor. Nobody else goes to everybody's door.”

Postal patrons across the state will be getting yellow bags in the mail this year to fill and set beside their mailboxes for pickup on Saturday. Last year, Oregon letter carriers collected 1.4 million pounds of food.

Barbara Peschiera with the Oregon Food Bank says donations from the U. S. Department of Agriculture continue to drop, and that's making it harder to keep food pantry shelves stocked.

“This is a critical, critical day to us. This will provide needed food to people across the state.”
