Gas Prices are Pumping Colorado Wallets Dry

May 29, 2007

Denver - Gas prices in Colorado and across the country are setting new records as the summer driving season begins. Roger Singer with the Sierra Club says it's time to take raising fuel efficiency standards seriously.

With the summer driving season officially underway, gas prices are reaching new all-time highs, and in Colorado, prices are well above the national average. Roger Singer with the Sierra Club says it's time to get serious about getting more miles out of each gallon.

"We should be putting our efforts into having a better fuel efficient vehicle, so we are consuming less gas and that way helping to solve the problem of global warming at the same time that we're saving a bit of money for ourselves."

Singer says that when Congress comes back into session, the Senate is expected to act on a package that could include increased fuel efficiency standards.

"If we can get our cars up to an average of 35 miles per gallon by the year 2020, each individual will probably be saving well over a thousand dollars a year."

The Sierra Club website has a calculator to find out exactly how much you could save in gas money with a more fuel-efficient vehicle. It's at www.sierraclub.org/mpg.

As summer road trip season begins, gas is more expensive in Colorado than ever before. Roger Singer with the Sierra Club says the timing has never been better to commit to increasing fuel efficiency.

The Senate is expected to tackle a bill that could increase fuel efficiency standards to 35 miles per gallon by 2020. Gas companies blame the high prices in part on a lack of new refineries.
