Your Backyard Grocery Store Summer Camp

June 4, 2007

Even in the middle of farm country, there are many Iowa school children who think their food comes from the grocery store, but have no idea how it got there. In order to educate them about farming and sustainable agriculture, Practical Farmers of Iowais once again offering its unique summer camp called "Your Backyard Grocery Store." Youth Coordinator Cedar Johnson says it has all the fun of regular summer camp, but teaches valuable lessons.

“We'll camp out and have swimming and canoeing and all of that, but the programming will be centered around where your food comes from.”

The first such summer camp was started in 1992, and since then over 400 children have attended. Johnson notes that campers are not just urban children.

“We have a wide range of kids, from farm kids to city kids, and hopefully that will be a good mix, too, for them to learn from each other.”

Agricultural activities will include an on-farm scavenger hunt, planning your own backyard garden, and a game show, "Place that Plate." The fun culminates with a family potluck held on the last day of camp.
