A 50-Year Energy Plan for the Midwest

A broad coalition of industry, agriculture, legislative and environmental leaders from Minnesota and four other Midwest states have come up with what they call a "roadmap" for the region's long-term energy future.

Spokeswoman Sara Bergan with the Minnesota-based Great Plains Institute says the 50-year plan is the result of three years of discussions.

"(It) includes significant improvements in energy efficiency, development in our region's wind energy resources, bio-fuels development and finding a carbon-neutral path for our coal resources."

She's optimistic the plan will carry weight, citing the combined effort of various groups that haven't always seen eye-to-eye.

"One of the things that really distinguishes this road map is that it represents consensus-based solutions from a variety of stakeholders in the region, rather than any one single point of view. So, the set of agreements is not only what's technically and economically feasible, but what is politically feasible."

Bergan believes Minnesota and the Midwest could gain economically, and even become energy exporters by exploiting their natural resources for clean energy production.

"We have a strong history in developing both our wind resources and our bio-fuel resources; we have a robust history in developing locally-owned ethanol plants, and as we move forward into the next generation of advanced bio-fuels, we have rich agricultural generations draw from."

She notes that the blueprint could save consumers and businesses billions of dollars over the next half century. The participating states are Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin and the Dakotas, along with Manitoba.
