What's Swimming in Iowa Rivers with You?

Des Moines, IA- June is National Rivers Month, and if you go swimming or fishing in Iowa lakes, rivers and streams this summer, you might be alarmed at what's swimming in there with you. The state Department of Natural Resources has added 135 new waterways to the "impaired waters" list. Hugh Espey with Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement says that's largely because of manure and other run-off from large-scale confinement farming operations. He says the DNR has the power to stop it if they choose to by using Clean Water Act permit system.

“They have had that ability for the past 30 years, and they have not used it with confinement factory farms.”

Espey sees no reason why the DNR hasn’t used all the weapons in its arsenal to improve water quality.

“Iowa has some of the dirtiest water in the nation. Factory farm pollution is certainly part of the problem, and Clean Water Act permits are part of the solution.”

Some farm groups disagree, saying the Clean Water Act doesn't apply to farm run-off. The issue will be a top priority at next month's Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement annual convention, including workshops for citizens to find out about impaired waterways in the state and what can be done to reduce that number in their area.
