Santa Paula, CA - There's no place like home, unless you're working for low wages in Ventura County, where a home is impossible to afford, even for many middle-income families. Housing groups, businesses, and city and county leaders are gathering tonight to brainstorm solutions to the housing crisis, and pass those ideas along to other parts of the state experiencing the same affordable housing shortages. Dora Crouch with the Santa Paula Farm Worker Housing Group says families are forced into living situations she calls "inhumane."

“They live in garages, in sheds, and they live doubled-up - three and four families in a house, sometimes more. It’s the ultimate disconnect with how they should be living.”

Crouch believes a mix of solutions is needed, including entry-level priced homes and apartments, and incentives for builders to meet those needs. And she adds it's not just farm workers who are affected by the housing shortage -- teachers, nurses, and service workers have also been priced out of the market.

Howard Edwards is the president of Limoneira Company of Santa Paula, which is the nation's largest lemon producer. He says affordable housing is just one component of what he sees as an overall economic development issue for the area.

“Don't only focus on providing bricks and sticks, but think about it comprehensively in order to bring attractive employment opportunities for people, as well.”
