Congresswomen Come to Iowa with Plan to Save Billions
Thursday, June 21, 2007
Des Moines, IA - The Iraq War is costing taxpayers roughly two billion dollars a week. Three U.S. Congresswomen think the financial cost of the war and waste in the Pentagon could be better spent elsewhere, and they're bringing their message to Iowa. Peggy Huppert with Caucus for Priorities says her organization is bringing in Reps. Maxine Waters, Barbara Lee and Lynn Woolsey to speak at Drake University Saturday. She says $60 billion currently being spent on unneeded Cold War-era weapons could be better used elsewhere.
"[It could be used for things] like insuring kids, making sure all children have health insurance, rebuilding our schools and reducing our reliance on foreign oil."
Huppert believes the emphasis on military spending is disproportionately affecting low-income families and people of color.
"They really do suffer as a result of the priorities that Congress has put in place."
Reps. Waters, Woolsey and Lee are co-sponsors of the Common Sense Budget Act which would realign the U.S.
budget, and moving it away from outdated military weapons and more towards pressing social needs. The Congresswomen will also appear in Waterloo at Faith Temple Church.
