A Pulpit in the Wilderness - Coming to a Church Near You
Monday, June 25, 2007
Climate change, toxic pollution, land conservation. What would Jesus do? People of faith, churches and conservation groups in Wyoming have been meeting to talk about that perspective, and more coordinated discussions at church are being planned. The Reverend Warren Murphy with the Wyoming Association of Churches says tough modern-day problems have solutions in the Bible and other religious texts..
“The whole theological understanding is that we're here to protect creation. Creation is very much a part of what God has given us through an act of grace.”
The Reverend Murphy says a conference is planned late this summer to talk about religion's role in taking care of the natural world.
He adds the idea that churches would be involved in environmental issues is nothing new, it's just become more urgent.
“The church has always had a word for that, it was called 'stewardship.' They were asked to be stewards for all of the creation, not just the human race, but also the animals, the plants, the Earth itself.”
"On Sacred Ground: Faith and the Environment" is planned for late September.
