WV Forest on Top-Selling National Tourism List

June 25, 2007

If you're wondering what to do this summer, the top selling tourism book "One Thousand Places in the U.S. and Canada to See Before You Die" just came out with a new edition that includes "the Mon" National Forest and nearby town of Lewisburg. Lewisburg Mayor John Manchester says "the Mon" is a rare wilderness treasure in the eastern United States and needs to be protected and preserved.

“That is an asset that is bequeathed to us, and if we can maintain it in that condition and be able to pass that along to people who follow us, I think that's just a service that we need to be paying attention to.”

The Mayor notes that only a small part of the forest is protected from road-building and development, and he's looking for leadership from Congress to give wilderness protection to more special places, including Big Draft and Spice Run near Lewisburg.

Manchester points out that hunting, fishing, and tourism are the economic lifeblood of places like Lewisburg, and road-building, logging, and other development in the forest would hurt the town.

“Tourism is our number one industry, and having a wilderness or several wilderness areas in close proximity here, is really what is drawing a lot of people.”
