Energy Bill "Energizes" Iowa

June 27, 2007

The push for renewable energy could soon become serious business. Congress is working on an energy bill that encourages biofuels and better fuel efficiency from new vehicles. Renewable energy consultant Ed Woolsey believes this has Iowans feeling "energized". He says no matter if its ethanol, biodiesel, wind or solar, the proposed strategies would put Iowa farmers in the forefront.

“These all have large geographic requirements, and farmers are the ones out there in the community that own that basic asset.”

Energy crops are seen as a savior for stagnant rural economies.

“The economic potential for new industries and new technologies is just an incredible a multi-billion dollar industry for us.”

Woolsey adds that biofuel crops may also help recruit new farmers who have been reluctant to get into agriculture because of previous lackluster crop prices.
