Low Marks for Oregon's Overall Health Care

June 28, 2007

A recent report by the Commonwealth Fund shows the state's health care system ranks below average -- a major reason is poor access. Advocates say a plan before Congress to expand the State Children's Health Insurance Plan (S-CHIP) to all kids would help.

Oregon Action has joined a nationwide coalition in support of the plan. Taneshia White is chair of Oregon Action's Health Care Committee. She says without insurance, kids can't get the medical attention they need.

“It's unfair and unjust that federal law denies basic health care to low-income children at the time when they need it most.”

White notes that the consequences of having uninsured children can be devastating.

“Denying children health care closes doors to opportunity, and leaves a life long legacy of health problems.”

White adds that they're also asking senators to remove regulations that deny S-CHIP and Medicaid for pregnant mothers and for children of permanent resident immigrants.
