NH Seniors Confront Medicare "Dis-Advantage"

July 20, 2007

It was supposed to give more health care options to seniors but two New Hampshire citizens groups say the Medicare Advantage program is a disadvantage for the state's seniors. The Advantage program works through private insurance providers and the New Hampshire Citizens Alliance and Working Families Win say it costs over 15 percent more than traditional Medicare, and provides less coverage. And they charge that one of the things the extra costs cover is commissions for private salespeople. Priscilla King of Bow recalls when agents called on her.

"A woman said she had a wonderful new plan and I said well I've already seen your wonderful plan and it's just not an advantage to me, it's a disadvantage. It costs more and I get less."

King also discovered that if there was an advantage, she wasn't allowed to get it because of where she lives.

"She had two plans. The first one cost more and gave me less, and the second plan I probably could have used, wasn't available in the Concord area."

Supporters say Medicare Advantage was intended to cost less and bring more flexibility. Critics say the extra costs should be used to cut fees and increase services for traditional Medicare programs.
