The waiting list has been cleared. About 1,600 more kids now have health coverage under the Children's Health Initiative of Greater Los Angeles, thanks to donations. But it may be a short-lived victory because funding for the initiative will run out in January, adding 40,000 kids to the more than 800,000 statewide who don't have coverage. Statewide health reform could help, and expanding the State Children's Health Insurance Program, called Healthy Families in California, also could help, although President Bush has his veto stamp ready to stop any expansion of that program. Initiative co-convener Howard Kahn says generosity only goes so far in solving the health care crisis.

"An awful lot of those kids are going to lose their coverage come January if we don't have a statewide solution to the issue of uninsured kids."

Kahn calls the Healthy Families in California system the bedrock of making sure kids are covered however President Bush argues that it unfair competition for private insurers. Kahn hopeful those will be fighting words to a Congress that appears ready to take care of kids' health.

"Republicans and Democrats came together and said 'this is worth doing,' and they found a way to fund it. It shows how much value there's been in the S-CHIP program."
