Oregon Wilderness-Leave a Light Footprint
Monday, July 30, 2007
With summer in full swing, tens of thousands of Oregonians are heading out to the state's camping and wild lands, like Three Sisters or the Wild Rogue wilderness areas. Jennifer Schmidt with the Campaign for America's Wilderness has a tip: enjoy, but also protect.
"The best way to enjoy these areas is to leave a light footprint: going in on foot or horseback or canoe; making sure to pack out your trash and clean up after yourself."
Schmidt thinks Oregonians can do a lot to help preserve the state's wilderness areas.
"We've got Memalouse Lake and Roaring River in Clackamas County and places on Mt. Hood like Hunchback Mountain and Mirror Lake. These are wonderful natural treasures for Oregonians to enjoy."
The U.S. Senate is currently considering a proposal that would give Oregon another 125,000 acres of wilderness protections on Mount Hood and the Columbia River Gorge.
