Farmers and Food Lovers Watching State Budget

As lawmakers negotiate the final state budget, farmers and food lovers are watching closely. On the table is the "Buy Local, Buy Wisconsin" budget initiative to help Wisconsin farmers market their produce, dairy products, and meats to local grocery stores, school cafeterias, and area consumers. Mike Carter with the Wisconsin Potato and Vegetable Growers Association says it would bring healthy, locally produced foods to state consumers, and it would be a healthy boost for state farmers, too.

"What this'll do is give the consumer what they want, which is locally-grown produce. But it'll give the growers the resources to open up those local channels, so the locally grown produce will be marketed closer to home."

The local food initiative was passed in the Senate budget plan. A reconciliation committee is working on the final state budget.

Jeanne Merrill with the Michael Fields Agricultural Institute says there's been bipartisan support for the initiative, and she notes it would be good news for rural economies.

"'Buy Local, Buy Wisconsin' is a great boost for Wisconsin's economy. It'll expand markets for Wisconsin farmers, and they'll receive a bigger return on their dollar for their product sold."

Carter adds that the initiative would help the state's farmers meet the growing demand for local produce, dairy, and meat.

"Consumers really like to have their produce grown closer to home, and they like to put a face with the food that their eating."

The Senate approved the local food initiative, and a reconciliation committee is in the midst of working on the final state budget.
