South Dakota has fallen to 30th place in the 2007 KIDS COUNT report that ranks states on their ability to address the wellbeing of children. Carole Cochran with the South Dakota KIDS COUNT Project says this is a significant drop from the state's 14th place ranking last year. She says the biggest change was infant mortality which increased by 50 percent, but there was other bad news.

"Our idle teens, meaning that teens are not in school nor do they have a job, that increased by one-third and the percentage of children living in families where no parent has full-time year-round employment and the share of children living in poverty, both increased by double digits. And this would be the first time also that South Dakota ranks last in the nation for child deaths."

South Dakota had 39 child deaths per 100,000; the national average is 11. Cochran adds that the bright spot is that the state is trying to address the issues.

"The South Dakota Department of Health compiled an assessment and strategy to improve the health of South Dakota infants, which came out in January of 2007. And we have specific data points and recommendations to help lower that number. I think another thing is the public highway safety department is certainly looking at our traffic crashes and trying to do something about that."

Car accidents are blamed for the rise in teen deaths, currently 80 per 100,000 young adults, compared to the national average of 40 deaths per 100,000 teens.

The annual South Dakota KIDS COUNT data book uses ten indicators to monitor the well-being of children; it's published by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. It is available online at www.aecf.org or by calling 605-677-5287.
