Cost of War Report - $1.2 Billion for ID...and Counting

August 15, 2007

The price tag is over one billion dollars for Idaho so far, according to a new report released today that details the cost of the Iraq war to state taxpayers. Jim Hansen with United Vision for Idaho says it's money that's sorely needed for better bridges, roads, schools and health care here at home. He says those priorities have been neglected to pay for war for too long.

"Those resources could be going to strengthening the kind of things that we're having to find money for on the state or local level, or just going without."

The war tab nationally is $456 billion, growing by $720 million a day. Congress has recently approved more investment in domestic programs, and President Bush has threatened to veto, or shut down government if Congress overrides his budget proposal.

Hansen believes that Idahoans have done their fair share in sacrificing for the war.

"It's time to restore support for families, children, education, and other spending priorities that have been on hold."
