Anti-Violence Experts in VA Watch Vick Case

August 27, 2007

Football star Michael Vick will plead guilty in a dog-fighting case in a Richmond federal courtroom today. Kristi VanAudenhove with the Virginia Sexual and Domestic Violence Action Alliance says the focus of the case now needs to shift to a scrutiny of who is upheld as a “hero” for youth. She says too often the public looks the other way when there are charges of violence in professional sports.

"The violence that they perpetrate against those who are in their care, or those people who they care about, or animals that they care about is overlooked."

VanAudenhove says another troubling angle in the Vick case is the strong link that has been proven between animal abuse and domestic violence.

“The dogs are one issue, but it’s not uncommon to hear tales of sexual assault, to hear tales of dating violence and domestic violence.”

VanAudenhove says she’s not just picking on professional sports and she sees similar connections for other popular “heroes” in the music industry.
