Iowa Hosts Unique Presidential Cancer Forum

August 27, 2007

Today in Iowa, the Lance Armstrong Foundation is hosting the first-ever presidential forum dealing strictly with the issue of fighting cancer. Dan Smith, president of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, says the forum is a chance to take an up close look at the candidates and how they'll tackle key health issues.

"We really want to talk about the specifics. About what you support as a presidential candidate and what you would do as president to help us solve the cancer problem."

Smith says cancer shouldn't be a divisive partisan issue and all Americans have a lot at stake.

"The solutions to this are not necessarily partisan solutions. They are solutions that we can come around together as a country and actually move forward."

Smith says the goal is for the candidates to talk about their views on increasing cancer research, increasing access to screening, and making sure the country has a smart tobacco policy.

The forum will be held at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, August 27 and 28.
