Montana Mailbox Voting – Sealed with a Kiss?
Thursday, September 13, 2007
Voting from the comfort of home seems to have caught on quickly in Montana. Bozeman held an all vote-by-mail election this week and the turnout was almost 35 percent. It’s something to watch as a Montana legislative committee looks at the possibility of eliminating polling places and switching to all mailed ballots for future elections. Debbie Deagan with Montana Conservation Voters explains the data.
"It appears that Bozeman experienced a higher voter turnout with all-mail ballots."
Despite that, Deagan says there are still questions regarding how well the all-mailed ballot system worked in the primary, and her group is checking in with county election officials.
While several cities have experimented with the mailbox ballots, she says the "vote" is still out on whether all voting-by-mail is best.
"We want to ensure the broadest number of voters participate and that their voices are heard."
