MT Farmers “Fly-In” to Make Their Case to Congress

Great Falls, MT – Montana's farmers and ranchers are talking about what's "COOL" and what's hot this week in Congress. Country-of-origin-labeling (COOL) for meat and the state's extraordinarily warm, dry summer are just two topics of discussion as producers meet with members of Congress. Montana Farmers Union President Alan Merrill says after years of delays, it looks like COOL is a safe bet for consumers.

"Currently there is no way to know where the food you're buying is from. With COOL, you'll know, and it will be implemented within the next year."

Merrill adds farmers will also ask Congress to delay a recent plan to shut down six Farm Service Agency offices in the state. While the idea of filing more documents by Internet is appealing, Merrill says it's not a viable option in many parts of rural Montana.

"The State FSA says that we should get on board with using the Internet, email and fax machines, but the reality is some of our farmers and ranchers don't have access to any of the above."

Merrill says they'll also be discussing a provision, introduced by Montana's Senator Baucus, for a permanent disaster relief fund to be included in the next Farm Bill. This summer's drought has been disastrous for several areas of the state, and Baucus' proposal is expected to get money to farmers in those areas more quickly.
