Tending the Garden – Idaho Churches Preach About God’s Green Earth

September 18, 2007

Boise, ID – Taking care of the environment is a mandate from God. That's the premise of a conference in Boise this week. "Let's Tend the Garden" brings together church leaders and their congregations from around the state, to discuss the growing roles churches are playing in environmental stewardship.

Pastor Tri Robinson of Vineyard Christian Church in Boise, says it's clear in the Bible and other religious texts, that taking care of "God's green earth" is a divine mandate.

"This is a Biblical mandate and responsibility for creation. We hope to clear up the confusion between what's Biblical and what's political."

Robinson's church scheduled summer outings to Idaho trails and the backcountry to highlight the importance of being environmental stewards.

"People can't appreciate what they don't experience, and if they don't appreciate it, they're surely not going to have a value to care for it. So, one of the things we're doing is trying to get people into the mountains."

The conference will explore the science of climate change, and consider ways church facilities, events and meetings can be more eco-friendly. The "Let' Tend the Garden" conference begins Thursday in Boise. More event information is available online, at http://www.letstendthegarden.org/conference/new_conference07.htm.
