Pierre, SD – Connecting generations and fostering greater civic engagement among high school students is the focus of AARP's "Legacy Awards." AARP is awarding a high school in South Dakota, and each state, $10,000 based on how the school is encouraging student civic involvement. Pierre native Shirley Eisnach with AARP encourages every school to show off what they're doing to "connect the generations."

"We are looking for an innovative program or any practice that they have operating in their school right now that would enhance student achievement or contribute to an improved environment for the students and the school or the community."

School principals will prepare entries in the competition for the "Legacy Awards," which also marks the 50th anniversary of AARP. Eisnach says the awards are meant to inspire high school students, all in honor of Ethel Percy Andrus, the first woman high school principal who became a "civic star." She also founded AARP and the National Teachers Association.

"I think this is just a wonderful opportunity to receive some extra money, to do something really special, and I can't think that there's a South Dakota school who cannot use 10,000 dollars in some way."

Eisnach says they're targeting public high schools for the awards because AARP feels it's important to celebrate their commitment to future generations and the historic ties they have to education.

The deadline to apply is October 1, 2007. Applications for the "Legacy Awards" can be submitted online at www.aarp.org.
