Minnesota Farmers Want to Make Disaster More “Predictable”

St. Paul, MN - Minnesota farmers joined hundreds of agriculture producers from throughout the nation for a three-day discussion on the 2007 Farm Bill with members of Congress in Washington. Minnesota Farmers Union President Doug Peterson says that one of the concerns with the new farm bill is to take the uncertainty out of disaster relief.

"We are asking that there be a permanent federal disaster program, and an end to the political log-rolling. American farmers who truly have suffered a weather-related catastrophe have a right to emergency disaster relief."

Peterson believes funding should not be dependent on other issues in Washington. He explains the importance of the farm bill goes beyond fundamental issues and considers it a matter of national security.

"The heart of the farm bill is really about food. More than two-thirds of its budget goes to programs such as food stamps, nutrition for the elderly, the WIC program and school lunch programs."

Minnesota Representative Colin Peterson heads the House Ag Committee, and Senators Coleman and Klobuchar serve on the Senate Committee, giving the state a major say in the outcome of the new Farm Bill.

Peterson says the bill will also include important conservation and energy programs. The House has already passed its version of the bill; the Senate is expected to finish work by late October.
