Advocates: Cradle to Prison Pipeline Scooping Up Too Many TN Kids

September 24, 2007

Nashville, TN – Learn to walk and talk -- and go directly to jail. That's what children's advocates say is happening to too many Black and Latino children, in Tennessee and across the country. They are meeting this week in Washington, D.C. to look at ways to divert kids away from what's called the "cradle to prison pipeline." Angela Glover Blackwell with the Children's Defense Fund says the 'pipeline' is a nationwide crisis prompted by the country's economic and racial inequality.

"The disproportionate incarceration of black and brown boys and men is not because they are 'bad actors.'"

She says childhood experts know what kids need in order to grow into productive members of society.

"Children need to come into the world healthy and participate in early childhood development programs. They need to attend schools that value them, staffed by teachers ready to help the children learn and prepare them to reach their full potential."

The conference starts Tuesday. More info is available online at www.childrensdefense.org
