Health Care “Dare” for Tennessee Kids

September 27, 2007

A health care "dare" begins today as the U.S. Senate is expected to join the House in approving extension of state health insurance for kids, also known as "S-CHIP". President Bush says he will veto what Congress approved because he believes that families that can afford health care will use public coverage instead of private health insurance. Ron Pollack with "Families U.S.A." says that statement is counter to statistics on health coverage that show costs have outstripped affordability even for some middle class families.

"This is not a story of people looking for a handout, this is a story of people in working families."

Tennessee's new "CoverKids" insurance gets most of its funding through the federal program Bush says he will veto.

Pollack says Congress has done the right thing in taking action on the health care crisis.

"The huge number of people without health coverage helps explain why health care has become the number one domestic policy issue among America's voters."
