NH Pastors Tackle Youth Suicide

October 8, 2007

Raymond, NH – Church leaders are reaching out to young people in pain, to help them survive their darkest moments and choose life over suicide. In the 15-to-24 age group, 21 New Hampshire youths die by suicide each year. Now, New Hampshire clergy and lay leaders are learning how to reach out to teens, and assist when they're at risk for suicide.

Dr. Kevin McBride of Raymond Baptist Church says being prepared in moments of need is part of a minister's mission.

"Our role is to say, 'How can I make myself more accessible, more reachable, and less threatening for the kids to find help when they need it?'"

Dr. McBride says the faith community has an important message for teens in turmoil.

"Suicide is a faith issue, but it is also a demonstration of how some fail to understand the value of life; or that there is something greater than themselves. Most importantly, that they are well loved.'"

The National Alliance on Mental Health is sponsoring a series of seminars: in Gorham on Friday, Concord the following Wednesday, and then Epping on Thursday.
