MT Voter Registration “Second Chance” Secret?

October 10, 2007

Billings, MT – Voter registration for the upcoming November elections ended this week, but Montanans still have other chances to register, although many may not know it. Theresa Keaveny, with the Montana Conservation Voters Education Fund, says residents can register at county election offices, and even register on Election Day, November 6. However, she says tracking down the "where and how" isn't easy because the state, and even some counties, don't publicize the details.

"We're urging counties to make sure they are giving accurate and complete information to voters about the availability of late and Election Day registration."

Keaveny says there were glitches with the new options last year, and their organization documented misinformation from several counties. She adds city elections are often overlooked, but local elected leaders make decisions that affect many aspects of day-to-day quality of life in Montana.

"City councils make decisions about transportation, trails, public health, how energy is used, planning & zoning, and how communities will grow and develop."
