North Dakota Domestic Violence Numbers Stagnant

October 15, 2007

Fargo, ND – Every year, thousands of North Dakota women seek help to get away from domestic abuse situations, and the numbers aren't getting smaller. Janelle Moos with the North Dakota Council on Abused Women's Services says in 2006, more than 4,700 abuse cases were reported in the state.

"We have consistently seen 4,000 each year over the past ten years. That is statewide, throughout 20 programs in all 53 counties."

As part of "Domestic Violence Awareness Month," Moos says state and national prevention efforts are underway.

"We really want to look at how communities are shaped. What are the social norms? What are the community norms that allow these types of behaviors to still be perpetrated?"

Moos explains the information will be used to better target prevention programs. She adds the 20 domestic violence shelters in North Dakota are strategically placed around the state, but many are stretched thin. In some rural areas, one program serves women in as many as seven counties.
