Rural Voters may Hold the Trump Card in Caucuses

October 23, 2007

Des Moines, IA - Hundreds of people are expected this weekend on the Iowa State University campus for the annual "National Summit on Agriculture and Rural Life," including some of the top Presidential contenders. Neil Ritchie with the League of Rural Voters, which is a cosponsor of the event, says Senators Obama, Edwards and Clinton, and Republican John Cox have confirmed they will participate in a candidates' forum.

"Iowa, New Hampshire and even South Carolina have significant rural populations. We're seeing some of the benefits of that (here) in terms of the interest that the campaigns are showing."

Ritchie believes rural issues are now America's issues.

"A lot of the challenges that face our nation, challenges around dependency on imported energy, some of the challenges of food safety from imported foods, and so on -- those are problems with solutions that are right here."

Ritchie adds that besides the candidates' forum there will be experts talking about the bio-economy, rural infrastructure, rural development, and the necessity for investment in education and health care.
