Education Week in ID – Take a Parent to Public School

November 14, 2007

Boise, ID – School attendance roll call may include some extra names this week. That's because it is "American Education Week" and Idaho parents are being encouraged to visit their children's public schools and get involved. Idaho Education Association President Sherri Wood says kids do better in classes when they know their parents are watching.

"It's our hope that parents will take an active role in their kids' schooling. When our students know that the parents are talking to the teachers, their achievement level increases."

Wood explains bridging the divide between what is learned in the classroom and how it relates to day-to-day life is a critical role for parents, and one that even those with busy schedules can play. She believes the partnership for high quality public schools also extends beyond families, into an entire community.

"I would encourage anyone in the community to take an active role in educating all our children. If we can all participate, we will have great public schools for all Idaho children."

More information about "American Education Week" is available online, at www.nea.org.
