Some WYO Hunters Feel “Goosed” by AK Oil Plans

Cheyenne, WY – The Wyoming waterfowl season could get "goosed" if oil drilling near a certain Alaskan lake gets underway. That's what Ducks Unlimited and other sporting groups are saying about a U.S. Bureau of Land Management plan to lease all the land around Teshekpuk Lake for oil exploration.

Teshekpuk is a remote, Northern Alaska lake that happens to be part of the National Petroleum Reserve. Conservation scientist Steve Zack, of the Wildlife Conservation Society, says it serves a critically important role to millions of migratory birds, as their "nursery."

"We literally have birds from every continent, every ocean, and for us in the 'Lower 48,' several species that we're familiar with in the winter are Arctic-breeding birds."

Teshekpuk is Alaska's second largest lake, but Zack says the area is just a fraction of the millions of other, oil-rich acres in the Reserve that might be more suitable for development.

"The issue is not where we should we be drilling up there, but do we need to drill everywhere up there? It's the environment around this lake that is most important."

The drilling plans are being promoted as a way to lessen U.S. dependence on foreign oil.
