Pike Place Vendors Mirror WA Small Biz Insurance Crisis

Seattle, WA – Who doesn't love spending an afternoon at Seattle's famous Pike Place Market? But behind the scenes, the fish-throwers, flower vendors and artists there have problems similar to many Washington small businesses –- they can't afford health insurance. A survey of more than 100 Pike Place merchants finds 39 percent have no medical coverage for themselves or their employees. Leanne Clarke, one of the vendors who did the survey, says they heard many stories from veteran merchants who sometimes must choose between paying their taxes and paying for insurance.

"Small business owners work hard. I know somebody who has worked 60 hours a week. Her business gets better every year, she makes more and more money, but she gets poorer, because her health insurance rates keep going up. Small business owners, and other self-employed people throughout the state, don't have many good, affordable options. We don't have the bargaining power that a corporation has, and so the rates are very, very high."

Clarke says her group, the Small Business for Secure Health Care Coalition, plans to take the survey results to the Washington Legislature to ask for relief for all small businesses around the state. The group will propose a state-run purchasing pool of affordable, quality insurance for small businesses. They'll also ask the state to play a stronger watchdog role over insurance company rate hikes.
