Columbus, OH – Greenhouse gas emissions will soar as air travel triples over the next few decades, according to two petitions filed yesterday with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The petitions, one from environmental groups and one from six states, are calling on the agency to make rules to reduce those pollutants.

Alice Thomas, an attorney with Earthjustice who is working on the case, says Ohio should sign on to the effort. She says, like cars and trucks, airplanes emit carbon dioxide, but they have an additional impact on global warming.

"They emit other pollutants at altitude, directly into the fragile stratosphere. These additional greenhouse gas emissions have an increased global warming effect."

Eric Bilsky with the group Oceana says Ohio's large population makes it important that the state get involved in cleaning up the skies.

"There's going to be a lot of air traffic to and from Ohio, so Ohio plays its share in the greenhouse gas problem that the whole economy contributes to -- and can claim its share of the benefit when we control that problem."

Thomas adds the airline industry has made some steps in the right direction, but there needs to be a coordinated effort, especially since air travel is expected to triple in the next 40 years. Possible improvements include better aircraft design, less idling of engines on the ground, and cleaner fuels.
