VA Budget Hearing – There’s No Place Like Home

January 3, 2008

Norfolk, VA – There's no place like home for long-term care for the disabled and those in their golden years. That's the proposition that Virginia legislators will be looking at today at budget hearings, as personal care assistants talk about the Governor's Health Reform Commission recommendations to strengthen the long-term care system by expanding quality care at home.

The official report calls for a ten percent wage increase for personal care assistants to keep the workforce strong and reduce turnover. Virginia Beach personal care assistant Renee Holt says families depend on the extra help at home.

"They are doing everything. So, somebody coming in and helping them out with their loved ones who are sick – if we are not there, what help are they going to get?"

Holt says she's dedicated to her job and would like to be rewarded for her work.

"I have a heart for people, but sometimes it gets rough because we don't get benefits like vacations and health insurance."

The state report says the demand for quality home care is projected to rise dramatically in the next ten years as Baby Boomers age.
