Commission: Universal Health Care Starts with Kids

January 10, 2008

Des Moines IA – The Iowa legislature empaneled a commission last session to study health care needs in Iowa. After months of hearings, the commission has released its recommendations, and number one is providing health care coverage to the roughly 30,000 Iowa children not covered by the Hawk-I program. Charles Bruner, with the Child and Family Policy Center, says health care for children is achievable this session.

"If we want to address student achievement, adult employment and health in the adult years, we have to start early."

Bruner believes the public understands the need.

"Public opinion polls in Iowa and the country show that we want to see health care coverage, but particularly we want to ensure that children get the health care services they need."

Bruner says the commission didn't address how the coverage would be achieved, but believes it will require a public-private partnership.
