"Home Sweet Home" Becomes Affordable for Some CA Families

Oxnard, CA – A "home sweet home" near schools, shopping, and priced to fit a working family's pocketbook, is a rare situation indeed in California. However, it's now an option in Ventura County, with this weekend's grand opening of an apartment complex in Oxnard.

The developers of "Villa Victoria" hope to show the rest of the state how to get families into stable housing. Cabrillo Economic Development Corporation Executive Director Rodney Fernandez says working families looking for affordable apartments quickly find that, for the most part, the market is not designed to meet their needs.

"The private sector focuses on one- and two-bedroom apartments. It's hard to find apartments for families that need three or four bedrooms."

So, the new complex consists mostly of larger-sized units. It is expected to serve the area's permanent farmworker families as well as low-income working families.

Fernandez says Cabrillo will keep management personnel on-site, helping to educate the public about the community benefits of affordable housing for the local workforce. He adds they will also spend time coaching the renters, about how best to work toward home ownership and other personal goals.

"We work with families and youth so that they can get ahead in the future. We try to focus in on leadership development, so that people know that they have a bigger horizon."

This weekend, tours of the complex were attended by elected officials and business leaders, all of whom are interested in how affordable housing can fit into the area's overall economic development plans.
