LeMoure, ND – Changes in consumer demand are altering the North Dakota farming landscape. Helping the state's farmers and ranchers meet these new demands will be a top issue at an upcoming state conference on alternative agriculture.

The Northern Plains Sustainable Agriculture Society Winter Conference is Feb. 8 and 9 in Mandan, with registration open now. The group's co-founder, Fred Kirschenmann, says state food producers are learning that many consumers won't buy just anything.

"A growing number of people now want to buy food that's consistent with their values, so it's a very values driven market."

In recent years, Kirschenmann explains, consumers have changed what they want in food, and it isn't just about cost any more.

"They want a high-quality product that tastes good and has significant health and nutritional qualities. They also want to know where the food comes from."

Kirschenmann believes that means more locally grown food marketed directly to consumers and more organically grown products.

The Northern Plains Sustainable Agriculture Society celebrates its 29th anniversary today. Information about the conference and sustainable agriculture is online at www.npsas.org.
