Red: A Fashionable Color in South Dakota Today

February 1, 2008

Sioux Falls, SD – Red is a popular color today as South Dakotans mark the American Heart Association's "Wear Red Day." It's an effort to raise women's awareness of heart disease, and encourage them to band together to promote healthy lifestyles.

Paula Hoy, who is chairing an inaugural "Go Red for Women" event in South Dakota this month, says heart disease is the number one killer of women, with one in three diagnosed with cardiovascular disease in their lifetime, and one woman dying from heart problems each minute. She says the Go Red movement encourages women to reduce their risk for heart problems.

"If people just get out there and get educated and get screenings and know their numbers and lower their cholesterol, they can really get ahead of the game here to fight heart disease."

Hoy says the dangers of heart disease really hit home for her when her daughter was diagnosed with a serious heart problem at age four.

"Heather has had four surgeries and she currently has a pacemaker. That's why we got so actively involved. Our little Heather, she kind of speaks out for everybody. It's not only for the older people that have heart diseases, but also it can touch many people throughout their life."

Hoy says, in addition to wearing red today, she's also encouraging women to get involved as volunteers and donors for the cause and to take the American Heart Association's online "Go Red Heart Checkup" at www.goredforwomen.org.
