Rights and Responsibilities Two-by-Two in NM

February 5, 2008

Albuquerque, NM – The polls are in and signatures collected, both showing strong support for the "Rights and Responsibilities Act" in the Roundhouse, the New Mexico state capitol in Santa Fe, where it still is to be acted upon by the state senate. Jennifer Rose with the A.C.L.U. of New Mexico says people like the bill because it streamlines current legal red tape when it comes to domestic partnerships, whether of same-sex or opposite-sex couples.

"It streamlines legal protections for both same-sex and opposite-sex couples, like hospital visitation and decision-making in times of crisis."

Rose says the bill is not just about benefits for couples, it also holds couples accountable.

"This is about responsibilities. It's about committed adults in a relationship who want to be able to take care of one another."

Rose says the bill is not about marriage, just about establishing legal guidelines and responsibilities for couples. Critics say the bill undermines the traditional responsibilities of married couples. The House has already passed the bill.
