Spokane, WA – Schools may be doing a good job academically, but just because you graduate doesn't mean you're ready for the "real world." Washington is one of five states kicking off a new effort to change that.

The "Ready By 21 Challenge" is a nationwide push to get communities, businesses and nonprofit groups together, to focus on ways to prepare young people for college, the workplace, and life as an adult. Trademarked by the Forum for Youth Investment, the "Challenge" is a set of methods and tools to help kids get the leadership, goal-setting, and other skills they'll need for success.

In Spokane, where kids serve alongside adults on the city's Youth Commission, Joann Benham says it will allow them to take some important next steps.

"We all want to do the right thing for our kids, but we don't know how to pull it all together. I really think that 'Ready By 21' comes equipped to help us gain that focus that we're looking for."

Benham adds the effort isn't designed to replace what kids learn in school, but to build on it.

"Schools realize that they can't do it all; there are just too many responsibilities put on their shoulders to educate young people. But they can't do that, without support for some of the young people's other needs."

The "Ready By 21 Challenge" is also taking place in Bellevue, Lakewood, Shoreline, Tacoma, and the Lower Yakima Valley, with some of the local efforts coordinated by Schools Out Washington.

This week, the Challenge announced several new partnerships, including backing from the American Association of School Administrators and the National Conference of State Legislatures; the United Way also has signed on to raise money for the effort. "Ready By 21" plans to have 200 cities and states working on the Challenge in the next three years.
