Qwest Call Center Closure Sparks Worker Disappointment

Sioux Falls, SD – When Shawn Dykstra hired on with Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in the late '70s, she didn't think her career would end like this. Northwestern's successor, Qwest Communications, will close its 411 directory assistance call center in Sioux Falls on March 28th. The closure not only leaves Dykstra jobless, but also without severance and education benefits. All this just six days short of her 30-year anniversary with the company.

Rozanne DuBois, president of the Communication Workers of America Local 7500, believes it's a sign of the times and that U.S. workers are no longer valued by their companies.

"We're just numbers. And if they can ship jobs outside the borders they're even happier. And the sad part of it is the actual severance amounts to $13,700, which is a drop in the bucket to a company like Qwest. I mean, they spend more than that per day on bottled water."

DuBois, who is also vice president of the South Dakota AFL-CIO, says it's disappointing that the company has veered from past agreements with the union that allowed employees who are close to retirement an opportunity to reach the milestone.

"I think what people need to know is that for 30 years Shawn has shown her spirit of service to the company yet they're unwilling to give her just six days."

DuBois says the company has been reluctant to grant the benefits out of concern it would be showing favoritism.

The closure affects 60 occupational workers and eight management workers. DuBois says those workers do have the options of following their work to the four remaining call centers in the 14 states that Qwest serves or going to a different call center in Sioux Falls - though, to be sure, for less pay. The company defends the call center closing, arguing that fewer people are calling for directory assistance.
